National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela is an institution of national importance funded by the Ministry of Education. It is one of the premier national-level institutions for technical education in the country. The main objective of the institute is to produce quality engineers and scientists in graduate, post-graduate and doctoral levels in various branches of Engineering and Science. NIT Rourkela was ranked between 291 - 300 in the QS Asia Ranking. In India, it was ranked 16th among engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2023. Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

The Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is set up to provide state-of-the-art education and research in Earth, Planetary, Climate, and Ocean sciences. Earth and Atmospheric Science is a strongly interdisciplinary subject that links different resources (e. g., minerals, energy, and water), natural hazards, and environmental issues, and also serves as a significant relation to weather and climate, which is inevitable for human life and our society. The department would play a vital role in providing resourceful manpower through the interdisciplinary way of teaching and research programs.

Climate of Rourkela

Rourkela city has a tropical climate and receives high rainfall during the Southwest monsoon season (June - September). The city generally experiences clear sky conditions during the month of December. The average day in Rourkela during December month has ~10 hours of daylight, with sunrise at ~07:00 AM and sunset at 05:00 PM. The city experiences a mean maximum temperature of 25^oC and a mean minimum of 10^oC, it generally feels comfortable and mildly cool. During December Rourkela is somewhat humid with an average amount of ~50% (Relative humidity), which could be described as comfortable.
